چکیده

Enhanced silicate weathering (ESW) by spreading finely ground rock along the coastal zone to remove atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) is a proposed climate change mitigation technique. The abundant and fast-dissolving mineral olivine has received most attention for this application. However, contains nickel (Ni) chromium (Cr), which may pose risk marine biota during gigaton-scale ESW Herein we derive first guideline dispersal based on existing environmental quality standards (EQS) Ni Cr. Results show that benthic are at highest when its associated trace metals mixed in surface sediment. Specifically, depending local sedimentary concentrations, 0.059–1.4 kg of m–2 seabed could be supplied without posing risks biota. Accordingly, globally safely sequester only 0.51–37 Gt CO2 21st century. On basis current EQS, conclude adverse impacts from Cr release reduce applicability ESW. Our findings call more in-depth studies potential toxicity toward biota, especially regard bioavailability metal mixture toxicity.

Geoengineering potential of artificially enhanced silicate weathering of olivine.

Geoengineering is a proposed action to manipulate Earth's climate in order to counteract global warming from anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. We investigate the potential of a specific geoengineering technique, carbon sequestration by artificially enhanced silicate weathering via the dissolution of olivine. This approach would not only operate against rising temperatures but would also o...

Negative CO2 emissions via enhanced silicate weathering in coastal environments

Negative emission technologies (NETs) target the removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, and are being actively investigated as a strategy to limit global warming to within the 1.5-2°C targets of the 2015 UN climate agreement. Enhanced silicate weathering (ESW) proposes to exploit the natural process of mineral weathering for the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. Here, we discuss...

Olivine Dissolution in Seawater: Implications for CO2 Sequestration through Enhanced Weathering in Coastal Environments

Enhanced weathering of (ultra)basic silicate rocks such as olivine-rich dunite has been proposed as a large-scale climate engineering approach. When implemented in coastal environments, olivine weathering is expected to increase seawater alkalinity, thus resulting in additional CO2 uptake from the atmosphere. However, the mechanisms of marine olivine weathering and its effect on seawater-carbon...

TheTemperature and Pressure Dependence of Nickel Partitioning between Olivine and Silicate Melt

We measured Ni partitioning between olivine and melt, D Ni , in experiments on mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) encapsulated in olivine at pressures from 1atm to 3·0 GPa and temperatures from 1400 to 15508C.We present a series of experiments where the temperature (T) at each pressure (P) was selected so that the liquid composition remained approximately constant over the entire P^T range. This appr...
